Mother Nature loves Knysna. Here you will find an abundance of natural beauty and one of the most pleasant climates in South Africa. With few exceptions, the weather is always mild in this seaside town and as a result there are plenty of things to do in Knysna, all year round. With more than 100 sporting and lifestyle events on offer over 10 days of festivities, the annual Knysna Oyster Festival from 3 to 12 July is one for the whole family. The diverse programme makes the most of the perfect weather conditions and July 4th 2015, marks the start of two fun cycling events in the busy winter schedule.
Backed by the Rotary Club of Knysna, the Momentum Weekend Argus Knysna Cycle Tour has a strong emphasis on family fun, both on the road and in the mountains. It’s worth noting that the main races are also Official Premier Seeding events for the 2016 Cape Argus Cycle Tour. The MTB event, which takes place on Saturday 4 July, is not restricted to the serious athlete and all levels of rider are taken into consideration with 15km, 30km, 50km and 80km mountain bike events, in a variety of age categories.
Leon Evans, aka Dr Evil, has been hard at work making sure that the mountain bike routes are in pristine condition for the races. These trails are usually closed to the public, giving competitors privileged access to private farmland and the scenic pleasure of unspoilt Knysna cycling. The road event takes place on Sunday 5 July with a 109km and a shorter 50km version, as well as much shorter distances for children only. There is even a 500m race for the littlest cyclists. The main race is set over a more challenging course this year from Knysna, to Sedgefield, Karatara and Barrington and then back to Knysna. The 50km route turns back towards the seaside town at Sedgefield.
This year a new 30km family MTB event is scheduled for the Sunday which heads out over an entirely new route called the Forest Dam ride, with stunning views and a fun atmosphere for all. The emphasis on this route is a “relaxed, guided Sunday morning ride for mom, dad and children 12 years and older”.All participants and spectators can look forward to a festival atmosphere and plenty of side-line and after-party action throughout the weekend, so book your Knysna accommodation as soon as you can.
