Garden Route Highlight: Knysna Heads

The Knysna Heads are one of the most famous geological features of The Garden Route. The heads are two enormous sandstone cliffs which protect the Knysna Lagoon. The lagoon – more accurately defined as an estuary – has five fresh water rivers flowing in from the surrounding Outenique Mountains. This surge of fresh water flows into the lagoon to meet the salty sea water from the Indian Ocean through the headlands.

Knysna Heads

There are various ways to enjoy the beautiful Knysna Heads, towering above the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon. Whether you’re a family looking for adventure, or a couple looking for romance there’s no better place to enjoy the beauty of the Garden Route than in Knysna.

Options to explore Knysna Heads

Sunset Cruises
The Turbine Water Club offers leisurely sunset cruises on the Knysna Lagoon. This magical sailing experience offers sweeping views of the Heads and surrounding nature reserve to be enjoyed with a refreshing drink and light snacks. In season, dolphins and whales can sometimes be spotted, too. Bookings can be made at reservations@turbinehotel.co.za or +27 (0)44 302 5746.

Hiking Tours
Strap on your walking shoes and head off on a hiking tour into the private Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head in Knysna. Tours last between three and four hours and include a drive up to spectacular viewpoints and an optional 2.2km walk through the coastal forest and into ancient sea caves. The Featherbed Nature Reserve was damaged quite badly in the fires of June 2017, so it’s best to contact the reserve directly to see if bookings are available.

Snorkelling
The Knysna Heads are a haven for aquatic life and depending on the season and current, make an excellent destination for snorkelling. The sunken remains of the Paquita, a German vessel that sank on the East Head in 1903 is a paradise for tropical fish and a good snorkelling spot for both beginner and experienced divers. Knysna is also home to the endangered Cape seahorse which is only found in the estuary habitats on the southern coast of South Africa.
