Following an extended period spent at home, what could be better than some outdoor activities? Better yet, some activities that are guaranteed to get your blood pumping. So, support local travel and experience some of our favourite Garden Route activities.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch the sunrise from the sky? If so, an early morning hot air balloon trip may be just what the doctor ordered. The cherry on top of this experience is a champagne breakfast.
Submerge yourself in the cool waters surrounding Mossel Bay for the ultimate Great White shark viewing platform. If ‘Jaws’ gives you nightmares, we recommend staying on the boat for this one!
If anything is going to get your heart racing, this is it! At 216m, Bloukrans Bungee is recognized as the highest commercial bridge bungee in the world, but it is also incredibly beautiful. Your adventure begins with a zipline from the bank down to the arch, after that, it is time to launch.
Glide through the Tsitsikamma treetops via strategically placed platforms and thrilling ziplines. This is a great activity for groups and families travelling with children.
Cloudbase paragliding offer launch sites in Mossel Bay, Wilderness, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay and where you take off from may be entirely dependent on the wind that day. No matter your starting point, this is the perfect opportunity to see some truly spectacular scenery from the sky. Cloudbase is also home to South Africa’s first female commercial tandem pilot, Khobi-Jane.
Warning: if you have vertigo or an unresolved fear of heights, we recommend you look away now! For those who fancy jumping out of a plane at 10,000ft, this has to be one of the most beautiful drop zones in South Africa with views of the Knysna Heads, lagoon, and green forests. Divers will in tandem with a certified instructor and reach speeds of up to 220km/h.
Located just 20 minutes from Knysna is the equally picturesque town of Plettenberg Bay where adventure company, Africanyon offers a variety of activities for you to enjoy. Embark on ‘The Full Monty’ which includes canyoning, ziplining, optional cliff jumps, and abseiling or ‘The Short’ which excludes the ziplining.
If water doesn’t float your boat, Plett also features some fantastic rock face abseiling with Afriabseil. Descend a 50m cliff face in the midst of indigenous vegetation down to the riverbed below with on one of the few Via Ferrata (a route comprising metal rungs that act as a ‘ladder’) experiences in South Africa.
Don’t worry, for those who have no interest in descending, jumping, launching, and chasing adrenaline, there are ample other relaxing Garden Route activities for you to enjoy.
Although we cannot travel right now, it is important to have something to look forward to so decide what tickles your fancy and plan a future trip. Make sure you include a few nights at the Turbine Hotel & Spa on Knysna’s Thesen Islands!
