Knysna is known for breathtaking sunsets, unique wildlife and distinctive views but there is so much more to this town than what meets the eye. This Garden Route gem features an array of lesser-known attractions and activities, if you’re willing to step off the beaten track. In this blog post we will be exploring the hidden attractions that make for a wholesome experience in Knysna and the broader Garden Route.

Millwood House

Millwood House is a place where you can get to know Knysna and understand it’s history. Originally built in the Knysna forests as part of the Millwood mining village, the structure was moved and now forms part of the Knysna Museum. Millwood House is an historical artifact on it’s own and is filled with the rich history that played a part in what Knysna has become now.

Township Tour

The Knysna Township is in a world of its own when compared with the rest of the town. This tour offers a truly special experience, where you get to learn more about the intriguing Xhosa culture. Eat traditional African cuisine that will set your taste buds a light. This eye-opening tour will give you a brief introduction to what life is like in the township by meeting local shop owners and interacting with the residents.

Brenton on Sea

Brenton on Sea is named after the Brenton blue butterfly that is only found in the area. Unlike Knysna, Brenton can be characterised by it’s beautiful blue flag beach. This serene beach is ideal for a leisurely walk, building sandcastles or a refreshing dip. If you are looking for a beach day, you should consider Brenton, which is located just over the Western Head.

The Big Tree, Tsitsikamma

The Forests of the Tsitsikamma are truly magical and nestled along the Garden Route. Looking over this natural wonder you will find a eight hundred year-old Yellowwood that has been called The Big Tree. What makes this such an amazing sight is the sheer size of this giant, which measures in at 35m+ tall with a trunk circumference of 9m.

The Garden Route is filled with some of the most beautiful sights, sounds and tastes, which will be sure to leave a lasting impression on you and your family. It always leaves you wanting more and it’s a place that never fails to surprise. If you are planning a trip to the Garden Route be sure to book your stay at Turbine Hotel & Spa on Thesens Islands to make the most of your holiday.
