Spring in Knysna has a way of waking everything up. The lagoon sparkles brighter, wildflowers thread colour through the edges of the salt-marsh, and bird calls echo across Thesen Island – with migratory species returning in time for the warmer weather. Beneath the water’s surface, though, another seasonal story unfolds; one of the tiniest, rarest creatures in the world: The Knysna Seahorse.
A Tiny Treasure
Measuring just 12 to 15 cm in length, the Knysna Seahorse (Hippocampus capensis) might be small, but it carries an enormous claim to fame. It’s the only endemic seahorse species found in South Africa, and more significantly, one of only two in the entire world considered truly endemic to an estuary system. That means it lives in only three places: The Knysna Estuary, the Swartvlei Estuary near Sedgefield, and the Keurbooms Estuary at Plettenberg Bay. Nowhere else on earth.
Unlike most fish, seahorses swim upright and rely on their curled tails to cling to reeds and seagrass, swaying with the current like tiny pieces of floating kelp. And in a delightful role reversal, it’s the male seahorses who carry the babies, a biological quirk that has fascinated marine biologists for decades!
Why So Special?
Beyond their rarity, Knysna Seahorses are an important indicator species. Their wellbeing tells us how healthy the lagoon is, because they are sensitive to pollution, changes in salinity, and habitat destruction. Protecting them means protecting the entire lagoon ecosystem, from fish nurseries to birdlife to the livelihoods of the local community.
They are also living symbols of Knysna itself. Just as the lagoon is the town’s heart, the seahorse is its emblem: Delicate, resilient, and unique to this place.
Where To See Them
Spotting a Knysna Seahorse in the wild is a challenge. Their camouflage makes them almost invisible among eelgrass beds, and they prefer to cling quietly to reeds below the surface. For most visitors, the best way to encounter these rare creatures is at the SANParks office on Thesen Island (Long Road), where this endangered seahorse has recently been successfully restocked in the educational display tank.
This initiative forms part of SANParks’ ongoing conservation efforts within the Garden Route National Park, raising awareness of this species and strengthening environmental education. The Thesen Island office is one of the very few locations in South Africa permitted to keep and display seahorses for educational purposes. Here, visitors can see them up close while also learning about the threats they face in the wild, from habitat loss to pollution.
For those willing to dive, local operators offer lagoon snorkelling trips where, with luck, you may glimpse these elusive creatures in their natural home. It’s more likely, however, that you will gain a better understanding of their habitat – as they really are a rarity, and excellent at hide-and-seek.
Why The Turbine Is Perfectly Placed
The Knysna Estuary has always been the lifeblood of our town. Its sheltered waters supported indigenous communities long before timber merchants and traders arrived. Later, the Knysna Forest supplied wood for shipbuilding, and the estuary was the artery that carried goods to the world. Today, Thesen Island, once a timber-processing hub, has been transformed into a vibrant residential and leisure precinct. The Knysna Seahorse, quietly holding on beneath the surface, is a reminder that our lagoon’s story is older, deeper, and more fragile than we sometimes realise.
Perched right on the water’s edge of Thesen Island, The Turbine Hotel & Spa puts you at the heart of this story. From here, you can stroll along the boardwalks, kayak through the canals, or join a lagoon cruise, all while encountering the seahorse’s world. Afterward, return to the warmth of the hotel: Spring dishes at the Island Café, cocktails at the Gastro Pub, or a pampering spa treatment inspired by our incredible surroundings.
Spring is a season of renewal, and few symbols capture it better than the Knysna Seahorse. Come and see why this tiny creature carries the soul of Knysna, and why The Turbine Hotel & Spa is the perfect base for your own lagoon discoveries!
