There’s something about the end of the day in Knysna that makes you feel like you’re on holiday – no matter the time of year. We think it’s a combination of factors; the light on the lagoon, the boats drifting quietly back to dock, and the evening air that fills with birdsong and wakes of geese in the sky.

Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or an extended escape, watching the sun set is one of the simplest (and most beautiful) ways to sink into a rhythm of rest and relaxation while away.

Knysna sunsets are unhurried and effortless, much like the pace of life on Thesen Island. Locals know it’s the perfect time to pour a glass of wine, find a good viewpoint, and just be still for a moment.

Here are five of the best places to watch the sunset in Knysna, from iconic viewpoints to right outside your hotel room.

1. Thesen Harbour

Right outside The Turbine Hotel & Spa, Thesen Harbour is one of Knysna’s most accessible and photogenic sunset spots. The marina fills with golden light, the cafés start to hum with evening chatter, and the views across the lagoon are hard to beat. Take a slow walk along the boardwalks, browse the boutiques, then come back and settle in for a drink at The Gastro Pub as the sun sinks over the lagoon.

2. The Turbine Deck

You don’t always need to go far for a great view. Our very own pool deck offers front-row seats to the lagoon – the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail or a shared cheese board. It’s private, peaceful, and wonderfully easy. Watch the boats glide by as the last light catches the water, and let the evening unfold at its own pace.

Note: If you’ve booked a room with a balcony looking out over the canals, you’re even better placed to enjoy the sunset view!

3. Bollard Bay, Leisure Island

If you’re after something quieter, Bollard Bay on Leisure Island is a favourite among locals. It’s sheltered, safe for swimming, and faces west – perfect for sunset. Bring along a picnic and a bottle of wine. This is a timeless Knysna sunset spot!

The Heads

The Knysna Heads are where the lagoon meets the ocean, and it’s hard to find a more dramatic setting for the end of the day. From one of the many viewpoints on East Head (the more accessible of the two) you can see the light stretch over the cliffs and out into the ocean. Stay a while to watch the changing sky before heading back to the hotel for a delicious dinner with a view.

Note: It’s worth planning a visit to East Head Cafe, a favourite eatery among locals with a stunning view over the lagoon mouth and ocean beyond. They close at 3 pm, though, so be sure to visit over breakfast or lunch time.

The Lagoon Jetty

For a quiet, simple kind of beauty, end your day on the Knysna Lagoon jetty. It’s peaceful, open, and perfectly placed for watching the sun fade across the water. (And for birders keen on seeing some of the local waders.) Couples often come here for a stroll before dinner, while photographers love the reflections and soft twilight tones. Make it your own secret spot during your visit to Knysna!

Unwind the Turbine Way

After a day spent chasing Knysna sunsets, there’s no better place to relax than back at The Turbine Hotel & Spa. Enjoy a sunset-inspired cocktail at the bar, linger over a light dinner, or retreat to your room where sliding doors let the marvelous sea breeze in!
