Our Story

From power station to luxury boutique hotel

A Unique Heritage

The Turbine Hotel & Spa is a remarkable testament to adaptive reuse and creative vision. Housed in Knysna's historic power station, this boutique hotel seamlessly blends industrial heritage with contemporary luxury.

Built in 1939, the original turbine building supplied electricity to Knysna and Plettenberg Bay for decades, playing a vital role in the region's development. While it ceased supplying power in the mid-1970s, the station remained operational until its final day of service on 26 June 2001. Today, the massive turbines and generators that once powered the region serve as striking design features, creating a unique atmosphere that celebrates the building's industrial past.

Today, The Turbine Hotel & Spa stands as one of Knysna's most distinctive properties, offering guests an unforgettable stay in a setting unlike any other hotel in South Africa.

HERITAGE & TRANSFORMATION

The Transformation

The conversion of the power station into a luxury hotel was a labor of love that preserved the building's industrial character while introducing world-class hospitality standards.

Original features including exposed brick walls, steel beams, and the iconic turbines were carefully restored and integrated into the hotel's design. Modern amenities and elegant furnishings complement these historic elements, creating a sophisticated blend of old and new.

The result is a hotel that tells a story—where every room, corridor, and public space reflects the building's fascinating journey from industrial facility to boutique destination.
