THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY

The Power Station Era

Built in the early 1900s, the original power station was a marvel of industrial engineering. Massive turbines and generators hummed with energy, lighting up Knysna and powering the growth of this coastal community during a transformative period in South African history.

For decades, the power station was the heartbeat of Knysna, its machinery running day and night to supply electricity to homes, businesses, and the bustling harbor. The building became an iconic landmark on Thesen Island, its industrial silhouette a symbol of progress and modernization. As technology advanced and power generation methods evolved, the station eventually ceased operations. But rather than face demolition, the building found new purpose—one that would honor its heritage while creating something entirely new.

Ceased Supplying Power

The Vision

Renovation & Restoration
