Named after the Thesen family who established Knysna's timber industry in the 1870s, the island honors its industrial heritage while embracing contemporary sustainable design. The Turbine Hotel stands as the centerpiece, a restored power station that once supplied electricity to the entire region.

The Turbine Hotel & Spa
The island's crown jewel, The Turbine Hotel, occupies the historic power station building that operated from 1912 until the 1970s. This adaptive reuse project preserved the building's industrial character while creating a world-class boutique hotel.
Original features including exposed brickwork, steel beams, and vintage machinery celebrate Knysna's industrial past. The hotel's two wings - Heritage and Nautical - each tell different stories of the region's history.
