Our Commitment to Sustainability
Meeting today's needs without compromising tomorrow
"Sustainability, the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
At The Turbine Hotel, sustainability begins with our story—the transformation of a derelict power station into a unique boutique hotel. This remarkable "recycling" project preserved a piece of Knysna's industrial heritage while creating a luxury destination that respects and protects our environment.
The story of adaptive reuse is told everywhere you look, with original machinery incorporated into the design and décor. But our commitment to sustainability extends far beyond our origins, touching every aspect of our operations.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is a major focus for our team. Through extensive monitoring of usage on each distribution board, we've pinpointed areas where energy can be used more efficiently, implementing numerous energy-saving measures over recent years.
96 Solar Panels
From originally generating power through steam, we now have solar panels feeding into an inverter and battery system, allowing the hotel to operate off-grid for up to 10 hours daily.
- Energy-efficient LED light bulbs throughout the property
- Heat pumps to assist in water heating
- Individual room air conditioning to avoid cooling unoccupied rooms
- Upgraded energy-efficient kitchen refrigeration and freezer units
WATER CONSERVATION
Water Saving Initiatives
Knysna is known as a water-scarce area, making conservation critically important. Through the history of our building, we benefit from large rainwater storage tanks beneath the hotel—a legacy of the power station era that now serves our sustainability goals.
Rainwater Harvesting
Stored rainwater is used for pool maintenance, garden irrigation, and watering public areas surrounding the hotel on Thesen Island.
Water-Efficient Fixtures
Water-saving tap spouts and shower heads have been fitted throughout the hotel, and guests are encouraged to follow water-wise practices.

COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT
Local & Sustainable Sourcing
Our commitment to sustainability extends to our culinary operations, where we prioritize local partnerships and responsible waste management.
Local Produce
Our kitchen uses local produce as much as possible, supporting small farms and businesses while focusing on seasonal ingredients.
Food Waste Reduction
Food waste is collected by a local pig farmer, supporting another small business while ensuring responsible waste management.
Oil Recycling
Used cooking oil is sent to a local biodiesel producer, contributing to renewable fuel production and closing the waste loop.
Our Ongoing Commitment
Sustainability is not a destination—it's a continuous journey. We are constantly looking for new ways to be more energy-wise, reduce our environmental footprint, and contribute positively to our community and the planet.
From our origins as a recycled power station to our current initiatives in renewable energy, water conservation, and local sourcing, every decision we make considers its impact on future generations.
